Spoken Word Poetry Success
Friday 8 November 2019
Fifteen Year 9 students took part in a Spoken Word Poetry Workshop at the University of Surrey for Black History Month.

On the 24th October 2019, Year 9 students took part in a day celebrating Black History at the University of Surrey. They focused on looking at Black History in the UK and considered the successes and achievements throughout history. Students also took part in a debate that encouraged them to consider if there should be a dedicated month for Black History.

The main focus of the day was around discrimination and discussing this topic through the poetic form of Spoken Word. Student learnt more about Spoken Word and the differences between it and other types of poetry. All students were fantastic at embracing this type of Poetry and wrote their own pieces and considered how they would be performed.

Students were a credit to the school during the day and their Spoken Word pieces were really thought-provoking and reflective. You can find the work that students produced on the day here.
