Year 7 Futures Curriculum
Philosophy and Vision
The introduction of the Kings Futures curriculum has been two years in creation. It stems from a firm belief that every student enters Kings College with gold potential and will leave having achieved more than they first thought possible. Experienced and specialised teachers have devised a bespoke and unique curriculum to meet the need of the new Kings student. The vision is to harness students’ enthusiasm, empower them with a personal understanding of their strengths, whilst developing areas of challenge to promote individual and personalised learning.
How it works
The six Personal, Learning and Thinking skills focus areas, have been refined through Government consultation over a period of years. They are identified as the qualities and skills required to be successful in life and learning. Taught in a ‘carousel’ programme, the modules are designed to comprehensively cover all aspects of these areas whilst providing a stimulating and ‘real’ experience for the students:
Sustainable Futures – a Technology based enquiry exploring sustainable resources for a sustainable future- Ani-mates – an Art-based project where students create their own stop-go animation
- All About Me – a project of self-discovery where students explore and develop awareness of their own abilities and strengths as individuals and in a team
- Forest Schools – a project in conjunction with the Surrey Wildlife Trust where students familiarise themselves with regular trips to our local green spaces and help to sustain them
- Kings’ Apprentice - based on the popular TV show. Students learn about product design, marketing and profit-making, culminating in a real sales experience where they make or break their budget!
- Celebration –in the final half term, students take over. They work as a year group and organise a reflective celebration of their Futures experience!
How we ensure success
Using experienced and passionate staff and an individually-designed online and interactive progression tracker, students and staff are able to see the whole student develop. Instead of tracking a linear line of progression, students are able to see themselves developing as an individual Kings learner.
What that success will look like
Happy, confident children! Students that move into the progressing years confident of their developing skills, success and future.
